Performance Pressure Profile – TEC

Discover the Quickest Way to Assess Your Own or Your Child’s Performance Pressure Profile with the PPP-TEC or PPP-Adult Versions

The Performance Pressure Profile (PPP) assessment is a short online student check-in designed to help you or Year 9–12 students and their parents better understand how different aspects of performance pressure may be affecting learning and performance.

It takes approximately 15 minutes and provides an individual automated results profile to help identify potential areas of vulnerability, strengths, and areas that may deserve further attention.

PPP-TEC: $19.95

PPP-Adult: $19.95

When Knowledge is Known, But Pressure Gets in the Way

Research indicates that high levels of test anxiety are quite prevalent in secondary education, affecting up to 42% of students, and in tertiary education, around 50%.

Under pressure, students can experience changes in how they think, feel, and respond. You may have noticed yourself or your child experiencing some of these common features of elevated performance pressure as exams or submission dates approach:

  • Increasing worry or anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Procrastination
  • Losing confidence
  • Becoming physically tense
  • Getting poorer results that don’t accurately reflect you/your child’s potential

The first step isn’t simply telling yourself or your child to “relax”, “try harder” or “be more confident”. It’s understanding what may actually be happening so you can begin to address specific issues.

What is a PPP Assessment?

The PPP assessment was developed to provide a broader picture of the different factors that can contribute to a student’s experience of performance pressure.

Rather than simply asking whether anxiety is the problem, a PPP assessment explores a student’s individual pressure profile across 7 key areas:

  1. Motivation
  2. Environmental pressures
  3. Personal meaning of performance
  4. Goals
  5. Feelings about tests
  6. Confidence
  7. Social comparison

It takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

It isn’t a pass/fail test and is not a clinical diagnosis. It provides a structured starting point for better understanding how a student experiences and responds to performance pressure.

What Will You Receive?

After completing the PPP, you/your child will receive an automated individual results profile.

The report provides a graphical representation of the relative influence of each area in the overall pressure profile to assist in targeting future steps.

For the TEC version, the report also provides:

  • Comparison of test anxiety scores with normal scores for the relevant age and gender, to realistically interpret the comparison with the average student.
  • Results of specific subcomponents of test anxiety (e.g. cognitive interference/interference in thinking) that may be elevated and warrant attention.

Why Look at a Performance Profile?

Performance pressure doesn’t necessarily look the same in every person.

For one student, persistent worry may interfere with concentration and remembering what they’ve learned. Another may understand the material but lose confidence when they’re evaluated. Another may place enormous importance on their results, connecting achievement with expectations, comparison with others, acceptance, or, unfortunately, their own self-worth.

A PPP assessment is designed to help students and parents begin to understand and communicate that individual experience.

What Happens After the Assessment?

For many students and families, the automated report can provide a useful starting point for discussing what the student is experiencing.

Results can help parents and students identify questions such as:

  1. Where does pressure affect me most?
  2. Is worry interfering with thinking?
  3. Is confidence a strength or vulnerability?
  4. What does achievement mean to me? Am I linking self-worth to grades?
  5. What appears to be working well?
  6. What might I work on next?
  7. Should I consider seeking extra help?

And, importantly: should I consider seeking extra help?

About Mic

I’m Mic Flanagan, founder of Peak Potential Life Coaching.

My postgraduate research and training examined test and performance pressure, and I’ve spent decades working with students, athletes, and professionals who need to perform when something important is at stake.

That experience has clearly shown me that pressure itself doesn’t tell me what each individual needs.

Understanding a person’s particular pressure profile provides a much better starting point for deciding what may help.

A PPP assessment makes that possible in a short, accessible assessment for students and their families

A Long-term Goal: Not Simply to Eliminate Pressure

Pressure is experienced precisely because the outcome matters.

The long-term goal is to help you or your child understand how you or they respond to pressure, develop more effective ways of working with it, and increasingly learn how to perform when something important is on the line.

These are skills that can change the course of your learning in life and matter well beyond the next exam.

Not Sure Whether a PPP is Appropriate?

You don’t have to decide immediately.

I offer a free 20-minute PPP Information Session where you can ask questions about the PPP and whether it may be appropriate for you or your child.

Parents are welcome to attend alone or together with their child. There is no obligation to purchase or complete the assessment.
